Apple Inc. timeline

Apple Computer Company was founded by Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak, and Ronald Wayne.

The Apple II went on sale on June 10, 1977, with a retail price of $1,298. The computer's main internal difference from its predecessor was a completely redesigned TV interface, which held the display in memory.

The Apple III was first announced on May 19, 1980, with a retail price ranging from $4,340 to $7,800, and released in November 1980.

On December 12, 1980, Apple went public on the NASDAQ stock exchange with the ticker symbol 'AAPL'.

By early 1985, the Macintosh's failure to defeat the IBM PC triggered a power struggle between Jobs and CEO John Sculley.

In August 1997, Jobs stepped in as the interim CEO to begin a critical restructuring of the company's product line.

Apple introduced the iMac, an all-in-one computer with a distinctive design.

In 1999, Apple introduced the Power Mac G4, which utilized the Motorola-made PowerPC 7400 containing a 128-bit instruction unit known as AltiVec, its flagship processor line. Apple unveiled the iBook that year, its first consumer-oriented laptop, the first Macintosh to support the use of Wireless LAN via the optional AirPort card.

In 2000, Apple introduced iTools, a set of free web-based tools that included an email account, internet greeting cards called iCards, a Web site review service called iReview, and "KidSafe", to prevent children browsing inappropriate websites.

Apple introduced Mac OS X, an operating system based on NeXT's NeXTSTEP and incorporating parts of the FreeBSD kernel.

In May 2001, after much speculation, Apple announced the opening of a line of Apple retail stores, to be located throughout the major U.S. computer buying markets.

In October 2001, Apple introduced its first iPod portable digital audio player.

The iTunes Music Store was launched in April 2003, with 2 million downloads in the first 16 days.

On January 9, 2007, Apple Computer, Inc. shortened its name to simply Apple Inc.

The first version of the iPhone became publicly available on June 29, 2007, in selected countries/markets.

The Apple iPad was announced on January 27, 2010, with retail availability commencing in April.

The iPhone 4 was first unveiled on June 7, 2010, at Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference in San Francisco, and was released on June 24, 2010, in the United States, United Kingdom, France, Germany, and Japan.

Jobs died at his home in Palo Alto, California on October 5, 2011, due to complications from a relapse of his previously treated islet-cell pancreatic neuroendocrine tumor, which resulted in respiratory arrest.

On September 9, 2014, Apple announced the Apple Watch, the first new product range since the departure of Jobs.

Apple becomes the first $1 trillion global brand.

In April 2021, the M1-powered iPad was launched, along with a new M1-powered iMac offered in 7 colors.

In June 2023, Apple released the Apple Vision Pro, a computer in the form of an augmented reality headset which runs the VisionOS operating system.
